Any life may contain a story that needs to be told, an experience that has changed a person’s perspective or altered the course of a life. It might be funny or sad, tragic or triumphant, humble or heroic. It needn’t be dramatic in the ways we might expect: it simply needs to matter.
By instinct, we turn to narrative to help make sense of the circumstances that shape our lives. In this workshop we’ll delve into our own compelling tales—the memories that tug at us most strongly—and explore the tools a writer can use to bring these stories to life.
We’ll consider and experiment with elements of storytelling such as place and characterization, plus the memoirist’s magical tool of reflection.
